Starting in early November 2008 reprocessed and forward processed Aqua atmospheres Collection 5.1 data products will be generated and will be archived in the LAADS. Only AQUA products are being processed in Collection 5.1 at this time. These products result from significant improvements in the Deep Blue aerosol algorithm and some minor adjustment in the cloud algorithms. Details of these changes can be found on the atmosphere discipline site at http://modis-atmos.gsfc.nasa.gov/products_C051update.html. Only a subset of the Collection 5 products will be regenerated as Collection 5.1. These are: Level 2 granule products MYD04_L2, MYD05_L2, MYD06_L2, MYDATML2, Level 3 daily, eight day, and monthly products MYD08_D3, MYD08_E3, and MYD08_M3. The remaining products, including the L1B and cloud mask, will continue to be generated as Collection 5.

The reprocessing will start at Aqua first light and will proceed in time order until October 31, 2008. This will take approximately 4 months and will be completed in mid- to late-March 2009. The forward processing will start at dataday Oct 31, 2008. For continuity reasons, the forward-processed products listed above will be generated for both Collection 5 and 5.1 through the end of 2008. However, beyond that time these products will be generated only for Collection 5.1. The historical Collection 5 data products will continue to be archived in LAADS at least until the start of Collection 6 processing.

When ordering Aqua Collection 5.1 data from LAADS Web, the collection needs to be "51 - Collection 051 Atmospheres". When downloading Collection 5.1 data from direct FTP access, cd /allData/51/ and cd into the appropriate FileType directory.
